"Starship Saladin"
« on: December 02, 2006, 11:44:14 am »
Starting up a new production, right now, it's just in the ideas phase, but here's a concept picture:

The Saladin was the ship we used in the Star Trek Role-Playing Game by FASA way back in the early 80's, and I'm probably going to do a video short one of these days.

Just a little fun.

Cool stuff.  Like CWM, it's always fun to see Franz Joseph's concepts being brought to life.

By the way, nice choice of name.  Looking forward to seeing more. :)

Wow. I saw the name and thought, "Oh, yeah. One of the destroyers from the tech manual. Cool." Sometimes I scare myself.

Nice looking ship, though. Can't wait to see more.

We show a starship in this class in Starship Farragut "The Captaincy".

The ship is the Quintillus.

Love it, let's see more!

Sik, I think that's a photoshopped concept picture, not a render (but I'd love to be proven wrong!)

I wish I could prove you wrong, but you are correct.  :)

I do have a 3d model in 3ds Max that I'm building, but that's the look I'm going for.  I want it to look like it was filmed in 1968, complete with questionable mattes and scratched film look.  :)

I know in this day and age of making it look perfect, that seems odd, but I sort of like the look that matches the early moon missions, as if it were shot on film in space.

I do think that the Exeter production captures this quality rather well.  "Tressaurian Intersection" really looks like it was filmed at the same time as the original series.  I don't care for the new updated effects in TOS they're doing with the remastering.  The Enterprise doesn't look real enough, it looks cartoony, in my opinion.  And it's a shame, because a little more work on the lighting and the ship's textures, and it would look so much better.

Great! I was hoping one of the current fan fics would show a woman captain, but to see a new project is better. I can't get enough of TOS era fan films.

In the TOS era, the Saladin would have been commanded by a male character, at least in my story.

The Sharia character is in the era of Enterprise C, and would be a U.S.S. Joshua class ship, similar in configuration to Saladin class.  Look at my signature for the summary of the character.  :)

http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/index-bp.html
(P.S.  Shane Johnson designed this ship, and it was the ship in the Starfleet fan club that I served on, in Dallas, TX in 1990 for awhile.  Shane is probably best known for writing "Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise," and "Worlds of the Federation."  He was also a crewman on our ship, though it was so long ago, I don't remember a lot about it.  I lived about 200 miles away at the time, so rarely got to go to any meetings, sadly.)

Most likely, this will be an all cg film, mostly spaceship battle sequences.  If we do any live-action, it will be mostly planetside, as I have no sets, unlike the fortunate people here, LOL.

I could, and probably will, make some entirely virtual, animated bridge and transporter room sets, and use some high quality blue or green screens to merge actors onto them.  I had an idea to use poser characters manning the stations, and blurring the background for shallow depth of focus.  A lot of shots in TOS looked like they could be done that way, just keep the focus on the actor who is talking and anyone really close beside them.  Simple trick photography.  :)
