Gay Trek Scenes in BAF
« on: August 27, 2007, 10:00:22 pm »
I was just wondering how everyone else feels about having a gay scene in New Voyages. No i'm not necessarily against it, just curious (no pun intended).

Also, has the crew at New Voyages checked into how it effects Hidden Frontier? I know some people who feel a little funny about watching it because of its gay scenes.

BTW I've been in two Hidden Frontier Episodes if anyone's wondering

uhmmmm, I honestly don't know how to approach this issue...I guess it depends on how tastefully it is done.  Flagrant Gay scenes are in my opinion too campy w/out a decent storyline.  Adding gay scenes just for the sake of them being "gay" is overdone and shouldn't be an single motivation for a plot or actor / actress.  If there is a decent storyline or message that needs to be said by a gay scene, I don't have any objections.  STNV is going where no one has gone before...setting new heights to what can be done.

I guess I will have to watch it to formulate an honest objective opinion.

Personally I see a romantic scene between two consenting adults.  Whether those adults be male/male, male/ female, female/female, or Wookie/Freighter pilot means no difference to me.  A romantic story with dramatic overtones set in a Star Trek setting will always peak my interest.

Agreed with the Bat.   :)

A gay scene/plot/sub-plot should require no more justification than a straight scene/plot/sub-plot.  On Earth in 2007, we're not "there" yet but we're moving in the right direction.

YES!!  Always agree with the bat!  ( Unless Erik says not to).  If anyone has a problem with this subtext...then perhaps you should not be watching network television.....desperate Housewives....the show with Sally Fields which name escapes me now....etc....hell!  Will and grace!  As Trek fans I think we all need to think of this.  Our beloved George Takei is a gay man.....do we judge him or accept him?  Why should "characters" in a teleplay be any different?

Thanks Lord Bat.

Your words are much much better than any that I could possibly post.  Being that I'm an emeritus member of Savannah Pride, active in HRC and Georgia Equality, I tend to get kinda "preachy"

Don't get me wrong...I totally support the idea.  I just think there are too many mainstream gay shows out there that tend to..."trivialize" being gay.  Sorry if I sounded like I am closed minded, I happen to relish the idea in BaF.  I know Gene Roddenberry couldn't approach this issue although he probably wanted to and did in other ways which worked to say the message.  Sorry if I sounded prejudiced...I didn't mean to.

LOL

I don't think you own an apology at all.  I think you're right dead on the money.

I was an avid watcher of Queer as Folk, and I watch Logo, and of course I watched Will and Grace.  (Incidentally Bat, for clarification sake, the Sally Fields show is "Brothers and Sisters")  I liked Will and Grace and I like Brothers and Sisters, and I liked Six Feet Under when it was on.  Queer as Folk, I couldn't stand most nights because it just focused way too much on the negative.  Don't get me wrong though.  It sent some valuable messages through out the series.  I guess if I were straight, I'd feel the same way about soap operas with the notable exception of the valuable message part...  LOL

I guess that all I want to see is where we as a sect of society, are represented with dignity and accuracy.  The way that I look at it is that my partner and I are in love like any other couple, we just happen to both be guys.  LOL  Know what I mean?

Personally, I wouldn't say "where no one has gone before".  I'd probably say "where MANY have gone before", hopefully also treating things with sensitivity and a certain matter-of-factness (new word?), i.e. not drawing excess attention to the fact that a gay person is actually walking the corridors of a starship.

Hidden Frontier introduced a gay character in 2001 and, much like any other character in the series (and other series), showed many aspects of his work and personal life, weaving in humour and good drama.

Oh yeah...  It's been so long since I watched a Hidden Frontier's ep, that I totally forgot about that guy!

See...  I think their representation was spot on.  (Good lord, where did the British come from?  LOL)

Judging from what has been produced by the writers and actors of NV so far, I can say with a great deal of confidence that fair representation and non-over dramatization have good stewards indeed.

Very True Andrew...

Yet when I look around, some of my friends are so blatantly flamboyant that I would court martial them in a minute.  One has to conduct oneself with a certain respect which sadly is lacking in so many mainstream shows which feature gay people doing things that totally don't make sense and used as a slapstick...that brand of comedy is like well its offensive.

Everyone wants to be respected but you have to walk the walk and talk the talk...right?

This is a good thread here...thank you guys for being here...you all are commanding miracles and you don't realize it...or do you?  I love that line in the episode...it is remarkable.

Thank you!
