Don't worry, I'm not going to turn Star Trek into a Star Wars/HALO shooter. I just want the Starfleet Marines (MACOs) to have some cool gear that actually would protect them in a vacuum or in ground combat on the RARE occasions we will have battles of that nature. One thing I actually do have are Saladin MACO insignia patches. So there will probably be a live action film that will feature them somewhere down the road. But they aren't the focus of Saladin, just a feature that differentiates them from the Exploration Division of Starfleet. Destroyers are in the Military Division. In this particular instance, I'm following the FASA designations of fleet operations. We have redshirts on the Saladin, but they are Engineers and support division personnel. There are still shipboard security teams that wear redshirts, but typically they are not on the same kinds of missions as the MACO's. Enterprise (the series) is a little closer to the way Saladin does things, operationally speaking. But our MACO teams are a large part of our crew on the Saladin. We do law enforcement, anti-piracy, Federation security and Defensive/Offensive operations, occasionally for groups like Starfleet Intelligence and Section 31 on VERY rare occasions. The Final Frontier does get explored by the Saladin, but not as often, and more often by circumstance than being assigned on exploratory missions.
The Enterprise and her sister ships handle the bulk of the kinds of missions fans are used to seeing in Star Trek. I wanted to do something that is usually 'offscreen' from the mainstream Trek, but we can infer that a lot of it goes on. That way, I can tell stories that are not clones of other fan films and have something that is different, yet, hopefully complementary in a good way to other efforts out there that I very much admire.
