Now that is some really smooth animation.  The NX-01 is especially captivating.  Great work!  But, then, you always do great work with these.

Yeah, really smooth.  Is the camera on the NX one following the ship or an invisible object?

Both animations are ships rendered separately from the backgrounds in layers.  Just like TOS, they had set starfields and composited the ship over them, I'm doing a lot of that myself.  It helps give it that TOS look.  I'm going to render out some more backgrounds though, as I think I've reached my stock footage limit. 

I'm glad you guys like the animations.

When I actually animate, (which isn't very often) I always do my backgrounds separate.  I find it renders more quickly, even though it means rendering two animations.

With the spaceships, I have to do that.  With the character shots, I put them into the scene so their shadows can properly interact with the environment.  There are rare occasions where I cheat a little with backdrops, but it isn't often.  I have done some virtual set work that I'm really proud of that will be seen soon.  To me, it's all a learning curve.  I've done cutscenes for games, but this project is one that is teaching me a ton of new techniques and letting me test a lot of theories on how to do stuff that I've had in mind for the last 10-20 years.  Fun and educational, and honing my skills again.  I love doing this stuff!

I don't do characters.    However, were I to do characters, I definitely would handle them differently.  I mostly just build and render ships.

It does have a very authentic TOS feel.

The Franz Joseph and FASA designs are kinda impractical-looking but are so whimsical that they more than make up for it.
