I think the red shirt rule doesn't apply to red dresses.  Think back to the series, how many women in red dresses (or any color of dress) got killed?  ;)

You may be onto something. Maybe that's why TNG tried those skirts for men in the beginning., it was all about survival.

List of all the casualties is here:

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Starfleet_casualties_(23rd_century)

Female casualties:

Dr. Elizabeth Dehner (science)  (but, she didn't actually wear a skirt)
Lt. Arlene Galway (science)
Lt. Karen Tracy (science)
Yeoman Leslie Thompson (engineering)

Wow, I didn't know they'd tallied them.  Thanks for the link.  ;D

See what I mean?  Not so many female deaths.  Only 4 that lasted.  Angela Martinez was killed on the Shore Leave planet, but she was revived like McCoy was.  Only one red dress death, despite plenty of Yeomen (including Janice Rand) beaming down in red dresses on a regular basis.

I don't think Angela was killed, just knocked senseless.
