Shatner suggestion for new Pluto moon name
« on: February 19, 2013, 07:43:21 pm »
'The man who played "Star Trek" captain James T. Kirk is summoning his sway with throngs of Trekkies to help get a Pluto moon named "Vulcan." '

Just doesn't seem right having a moon in the SOL system named Vulcan

I have to disagree with Shatner on renaming a moon of Pluto to Vulcan.  If we name anything "Vulcan," it should be a "Goldielocks Zone" planet (a planet where there is at least a hope of intelligent life).  Besides, Pluto does not necessarily fit the scientific definition of a planet.  Some astronomers dispute Pluto's status in that regard.  So, if Pluto has an object orbiting it, it doesn't necessarily fit the scientific definition of a moon.

No, Bill!  Bad Bill!

Pluto is a dwarf planet (officially.)  Its "moon" is believed to be a large asteroid that was pulled into orbit around it.  Considering that Vulcan is a major planet in Star Trek, why would we want to give an asteroid that name?  Unfortunately, this is the type of crap the Shat pulls when he feels he's not getting enough attention.   ::)

Just for the record, Pluto has 5 known moons (not just one as many people think): Charon, Nix, Hydra and two unnamed others. The last two are the ones that are going to be named soon, the other three will keep their names.

By the way, I have voted for "Vulcan" in the site given by 1st Ometiklan... Why not? I never remember the names given to the other planets moons, people tend to read it in an astronomy book and then just forget the names. If one of Pluto's moons had a name like "Vulcan" I would remember it for the rest of my life. Of course, that's not that important, but it's just a name, isn't it?

I wonder what Mr. Abrams would say after seeing that his effort to destroy Vulcan was useless :)

Hm, I guess somebody hasn't seen Back to the Future Part II:P  The scene with Doc and Marty in the alternate 1985 where Doc is explaining the creation of an alternate time line when Biff came back in time from 2015 and interfered with the time line is probably one of the best explanations on film for that phenomenon.  Basically, something or someone comes back in time, interferes with the time line and creates a fork in said time line.  So, both the original time line and the forked time line continue in parallel.  So, yes, Vulcan was destroyed in one time line, while it continued to exist in another.

But, we're venturing pretty far off topic here.  ;)

I did, and there's a huge mistake in that movie. But you are right, we are off topic. I'd love to discuss that mistake, but we'll have to create another thread for that :P

There are quite a few problems with all of those movies, but that's hardly important.  Though, the alternate time line creation explanation is valid.  Though, so as not to hijack this thread, I created a discussion thread for that here.

And, really, changing one of Puto's moons' names to Vulcan changes nothing.  It's not any different than getting them to name a space shuttle Enterprise.  (and, coincidentally, the one that couldn't actually go into space ;))  It's just Trek fans having a bit of fun.  Besides, the Vulcan name in this instance comes from Roman mythology, all of the name suggestions were from Greek or Roman mythology.  It will be interesting to see if they actually name it Vulcan, since it won the vote.
