Just saw the new JJ Abrams movie and it was reasonable good. There again it should have been since it was a mashup of a couple of prior movies one in particular but I will not name the movies since that would give away the reveal. I will say I liked the acting better and I do think Chris Pine has settled into the character if Kirk and I thought the interaction between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy was good. Did like the fact that Uhura played a bigger role but at the same time found the relationship aspect between her and Spock out of sync. Simon Pegg's portrayal of Scotty is growing on me and he had some major plot points in the movie. Also, the new engineering set is better and does not look like I could walk up to the warp core and draw myself a brew.
. Did like John Cho's portrayal of Sulu but find the Chekhov character annoying too whiny.
The movie itself had major pieces that belonged to other Star Trek films which I can see as an attempt to attract viewers of the other iterations of Star Trek. But for a fan many of the reveals and scenes were not new and I did find myself anticipating the second half even without reading some more revealing interviews and found myself constantly comparing scenes which took me out of the film completely. Overall I would give it 3 out of 5 for primarily the action sequences and to some extent the acting.
I hated the new dress uniforms. Please no more hats, I hate hats.
